We learned the old ways to create new ones. This goes for any kind of work line, even weekend plumbers! Here are modern plumbing tips which can be used to better the craft of plumbing, day-in and day-out every weekend.

Replace Metal Drain Lines to Plastic Ones

When a leaky metal drain under the sink needs to be fixed, try replacing it with a plastic one. It’s a smarter way of preventing future drain problems and to know the ‘why’ factor, view it now :-

  • Drain line made of plastic is much easier to install than a metal one
  • A plastic drain line is cost-efficient as it is also non-biodegradable; means it does not degrade easily unlike metal which is corrosive in nature
  • Making adjustments or compressions to leaks comes by as an effortless task

Learning the type of materials used to make different kinds of pipe lines is a step towards making long-term instalments, saving money and avoiding mini-floods.

Keeping Supply Lines in ‘Neutral’ Mode

Most plumbers are inclined to tighten pipe lines extra tight, which leads to insecure compressions later on. Tightening the lines over its limit causes potential damage to the line’s rubber seal and shaves off parts of the threaded nut. So, in order to avoid this use your fingers to make sure that both end connections are tightened just at the right spot. Finally, with the use of pliers whirl the lines one-eighth to one-quarter.

Plumbing Tips

Cons of Using Plumber’s Putty

Although Plumber’s putty is a plumbing sub-tool the irony is that Riverside Plumber avoids using them. To learn the cons of Plumber’s putty, go right here:-

  • It causes damage if your pipe line is plastic-based. Also, it tends to land a patch of stain on surfaces made of stone.
  • The working behind the putty is that it initially is a clayey substance, it later dries off and seemingly forms fissures. These rifts act as openings for water to dribble through hence, causing a leak.

A better option instead of putty would be to use Silicone caulk. It is a glue-like substance consisting of durable sealants, this forms a concrete barrier over the pipe lines. Therefore, keeping the water leaks at bay. Additionally, it’s easier to seal the lines because the caulk comes out through a small opening tip and makes it easier to control and place the seal without making a mess.

Removing Clogs gets Easier Now

Typically, to fix pipe clogs plumbers run a drain snake or begin deconstructing the drain parts. There are easier methods now without getting yourself into a clutter. Follow these tips mentioned below :-

  • Time to equip yourselves with pick-up tools, preferably a flexible one to tug the blockage out from the pipe
  • Or try using a zip-it tool instead, both tools are available in the market
  • Another alternative is to use a machine which can suck out the vacuum through the sink pipe like a dry vacuum cleaner

Pro tip : Thinking outside the box saves time and effort

You VS Ancient Pipelines

Want to remove soldered pipes without a hitch? Follow the steps listed below:

  1. Ensure to wear safety goggles and gloves so that the heat does not hurt your eyesight or burn your hands
  2. Next get yourself a wet rag. Prep a blowtorch because the solder is a low-melting alloy and can be easily heated off from the main body of the pipe.
  3. Start burning the solder portion. It will slowly melt down and when it does wipe it over using the wet rag, in quick action. Make sure to clean it off before it solidifies.
  4. Now, if the soldered portion is not completely removed then it’s time to get scrapping! You will need sandpaper (the Hard one) or better yet, an Emery cloth to shed off the excess leftover.
  5. Finally, you can fit a new connection to the newly remade structure.

How to Spend Money on Things Worth Buying

In this case, the purchase of a new supply line when the older one degrades is a better option (really) because reusing older ones do no good to your supply lines. They are less effective than the original and not durable enough to handle the water pressure. This is in no way, a good example of saving money.

The reasons why newer is better can be explicitly stated below :-

  • For a change, getting the braided stainless steel lines greatly reduces the chances of a pipe burst; which is also likely possible in a new plastic supply line
  • It is much capable of handling intense water pressure as compared to plastic lines.

But remember that disposable parts are called disposable for a reason, replace the braided lines when it gets older to avoid leaks and bursts

Pro tip : Smart investment is better than an expensive one!

More than One Way of Using Thread Sealant

There is an entire process of fixing pipes, after the lines are fixed next would be to seal them. In this step, plumbers use a sealant called Thread Sealant. It is a type of substance whose primary function is to secure threads but it’s use does not stop there. Thread sealant can be used to close up any two connections; fully and partially. Some of its uncommon uses are listed below :-

  • Compression fittings
  • Ground fittings
  • Rubber seals

The lubricating property of this pipe dope easily connects linings resulting to solid  seals.

Pro tip : Using a seal which does not harden keeps the job of the plumber easier because dismantling parts turn into a beginners task. Reminder to check dope type as some are corrosive for fittings made of plastic.

Moving Stubborn Pipes

This method is applicable only for water and waste pipe lines. When threaded connections are difficult to turn out from its fitting, especially if the seal is already solidified through years of aging you can try to apply direct heat on it. Although this takes several minutes to work, the result is fruitful.  But make sure the surrounding parts around the firm thread is safeguarded, covering them with heat-resistant cloth.

Pro tip : Never try this on fuel or gas lines, outcome is dangerous

Thread Tapes Instead of Dope to Seal ?

Thread tape and pipe dope share a similar function, making seals over pipe connections. Have you wondered of a mess-free way of sealing threads? Then the thread tape is suitable for your work style! Clean and efficient – unlike dope.

Dope is a lubricant substance that deals with a careful application and use. But thread tape allows the user to wrap end threads quicker without making a litter. You can use thread tape in the following way :-

  • But first, selecting the right kind of tape opens easier routes to its application. Thicker ones are more beneficial than thinner ones, tearing off the tape gets as neat as possible. Colour coded tapes are also available so search pink for water thread lines and yellow for gas thread lines
  • It does not have a dual function like dope so, use it only for pipe threads; it says so in its name
  • According to several pro Riverside Plumber, going for three wraps around the thread end does the trick!

Pro tip : Remember to turn the tape in a clockwise fashion otherwise it will unwind itself as you screw the joint end connections

A Convenient Grip

Looking at the technical aspect of this procedure, in order to avoid shedding the set screw off use a multi- purpose compound called valve grinding compound along with a tool called hex socket. Next, use your hand to give a moderate squeeze to the socket at the far end of the set screw. Then with your free hand pull the ratchet handle. Lastly, with a speedy tug loosen the set screw.
