If you are reaching retirement age and a bit hesitant about the future, that is completely normal! Many people can have a difficult time adjusting to their new lives and schedules as they go from 35 or more years of work to simply being able to do whatever they like. If this sounds like you and if you are apprehensive about retirement, it might be time to think about ways to keep yourself occupied!
Join A Book Club
Joining a book club is not only an excellent way to make sure you keep your mind sharp by reading and learning about new subjects but it is the perfect way to meet new people. If you join a book club then you are guaranteed a minimum amount of social interaction every week! Book clubs encourage intellectual stimulation and will help you see things from a different point of view. The other members of the club will ask poignant questions that you will then discuss together.
Gardening
You do not have to have a green thumb in order to be a successful gardener! Gardening can look very simple and can consist of even keeping herbs and small plants in your kitchen. Alternatively, you could garden in your yard according to season. You could have a spring, summer and winter produce garden that would need your time and attention. It would also help you get out of the house!
Seniors Nights
Many community centers, restaurants and even bars will have monthly seniors nights. This is a time for people of the same age to come together and meet, perhaps for the first time. If there are not many seniors nights in your area, maybe you should think about starting and hosting the first one!
Going Back To School
That’s right – many seniors are not opting to go back to school to finish their degree, to do their masters or to get the degree they always wanted but never had time to do. Most community colleges are open to enrolling seniors in their classes for continued education. You might be older than the professor but this does not mean you do not belong! There is much to be said about the retiree that still has the mind of an inquisitive student.
Traveling
Keeping your schedule busy with many travel plans is the perfect way to stay excited about the future. You do not necessarily have to plan overseas trips but even booking a flight or planning to take a small road trip to see friends or family is a safe and responsible way to keep yourself busy. Before making any big decisions, be sure to talk to your doctor about potential destinations and any potential risk factions.
