Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp by Overland

There are two different entries through overland driving on a bus and jeep from Kathmandu. These routes are long EBC hiking routes. The trekkers who have a long vacation can use these routes to reach the bottom of Everest. So, what are the places that you can drive from Kathmandu to start the EBC trip from Kathmandu?

Driving to Jiri on a Bus

Starting the trip from Jiri is a long and classic hiking route to Everest. There used to be a couple of hundred trekkers every day a few years ago on this trail. When the Lukla route has started, most of the trekkers started to follow the Lukla route, then the number of trekkers reduced on this trail.

Jiri to Everest route goes with about 7 hours drive on a bus through the hillside road. After reaching Jiri, you will spend the first night there and start walking the next day. The hiking route passes the villages like Shivalaya, Deurali and arrives at Bhandar on the first day’s walk. After that, you will reach Sette on the second-day hike passing Kinja town.

Now, there is Lamjura La pass after Sette on the way to Junbesi. Spending a night in Junbesi, you will trek to Nunthala via Taksindo monastery. You will hike to Tham Danda and Chaurikharka and join the Lukla route. Jiri to EBC route has a lot of up and downhills.

Driving to Salleri on a Jeep

Salleri to Everest base camp is another long hiking route. But, it is a few days shorter compared to the Jiri route. Saleri path is new than the Lukla and Jiri trails. There are a few hikers during the high trekking seasons on this trail. You need to have around three weeks if you would like to use this trail for the Everest trip.

About 8 hours jeep drive takes you to Salleri from Kathmandu. You will stay overnight after getting off from the jeep in Salleri and start walking the next day. You will go to Taksindo, Wapsa, Paiya, and Phakding to join the Lukla trail. Jiri and Saleri trails begin from the low elevation and go to the higher areas gradually. So, you might have less chance of getting altitude sickness.

Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp By Air

Everest base camp trips through air transport are shorter than using land transportation. You reach directly to the higher using airways like a plane and a helicopter. If you use the plane to fly to Lukla, you still need to walk around eight days to reach the base camp. But if you take a helicopter ride, you can get to your destination within a few hours from Kathmandu.

Fly to Lukla and hike to EBC

Lukla to Everest base camp is the shortest regular trekking path to reach your dream destination. There are a couple of hundred hikers every day during the pick seasons. It is about two weeks trip from Kathmandu to Kathmandu.

You will fly to Lukla from Kathmandu on a plane. It is a short adventurous scenic fight. After you fly half an hour, you land at the Lukla airport and trek to Phakding on the first day. You will trek inside the Sagarmatha national park from the second day on this mountain tour.

Namche Bazaar is one of the beautiful Sherpa towns on the trip. You will spend two nights here for the altitude practice. Then, you will trek to Tengboche and visit an ancient historical Buddhist monastery. Furthermore, you will go to Dingboche and take the second acclimatization rest day. Now, you are just two days behind from the base camp. You will trek to Lobuche and Gorakshep before reaching your goal.

After visiting the base camp, you will trek back to Lukla with three long days hike. And you fly out on a plane to Kathmandu. If you do not have enough time for it, you can make it in 9 days. You will follow the same itinerary until the base camp and fly out on a helicopter rather than walking back to Lukla.

Direct Flight to EBC on a Helicopter

Don’t you have many days for a trek or can’t trek on the high Himalayan lands? But, you are still interested in visiting the world’s highest mountain base camp. Yes, you have an option for it. You can fly on a helicopter from the beautiful city (Kathmandu) directly to the Everest base camp. It is a few hours flight and the landing flight tour. There are several landings in different locations and viewpoints before visiting the base camp.

Everest base camp helicopter tour is a luxury trip to Everest. You can fly with others as a joining trip or can charter your own. After taking off from Kathmandu, it lands in Lukla for the fuel and lands at Everest view hotel or Pheriche. Then, you will land in Kala Patthar and enjoy the stunning Everest massif.
