Annually World Hypertension Day is celebrated on May 17 to raise the awareness of the public about hypertension, its preventive and complication measures. First, It was celebrated on May 14 May in 2005 organized by the World Hypertension League.
WHAT IS HYPERTENSION
Hypertension is a condition called high blood pressure during which the arterial blood pressure rises to a high level from the normal level (120/80 mmHg). As it does not show any clear symptoms, it is a medical condition called silent killer, however severe hypertension shows some symptoms of headaches, confusion, sleepiness, palpitation, blurred vision, fatigue, breathing difficulty, dizziness, ringing sensation in the ears, irregular heartbeat which may lead to even coma.
On the basis of its causing factors, it is further divided into two types (primary or essential hypertension and secondary hypertension). Primary hypertension is a more common problem but its causes are unknown. Whereas, secondary hypertension causes are aortic coarctation, adrenal gland overactivity, kidney damage, tumors, sleep apnea syndrome, recreational drugs, thyroid gland dysfunctioning, pregnancy-related conditions, over or wrong medications, alcoholic drinks, bad food and etc.
It is also a transmittable disease that can be transmitted to children from parents having hypertension or a family history of diabetes, obesity, smoking, lack of exercise, excess alcohol drink, use of oral contraceptive pills, etc. Its complications are atherosclerosis means narrowing of arteries, brain hemorrhage means blood clots in the brain (stroke), heart attack, aneurysm, kidney failure, heart failure, eye damage, etc.
WORLD HYPERTENSION DAY HISTORY
Celebration of World Hypertension Day all over the world was started and established by The World Hypertension League (WHL). WHL is a health organization that leads around 85 national hypertension societies and associations worldwide. To increase the common public awareness about hypertension, it has started the campaign of hypertension day. WHL had launched the campaign of World Hypertension Day for the first time on the 14th of May in 2005 however it had started celebrating dedicatedly every year on the 17th of May since 2006.
WHY WORLD HYPERTENSION DAY IS CELEBRATED
Annually it is celebrated since 2005 to distribute the message of maintenance of normal blood pressure among the public. High Blood Pressure means hypertension causes various complications in the body and may lead to a major risk of stroke, heart, eye disorders, kidney disease, coma, or even death. Blood pressure can be measured at home or hospital using an acceptable measuring device called the BP apparatus.
HOW WORLD HYPERTENSION DAY IS CELEBRATED
Dedicatedly every year, World Hypertension Day is celebrated on the 17th of May since 2005 to raise the common public awareness about hypertension through a variety of activities and events. Health and medical professionals from the government and non-government sectors participate in the campaign celebration and support in organizing lots of functions for an easy understanding of the public.
Several activities which are getting organized on celebration are debates on the subjects of high blood pressure, public forum, debates brisk walk or run activities, public forum, brisk walk or run activities, health screening, free blood pressure checkup camp, media write-up, banners and poster distribution in the schools, colleges, and other educational institutions, discussions, messages distribution through the radio and TV channels and lots of other activities.
