You travel over 5,000 kilometers to the destination you thought about all year. You walk around, enjoy the scenery, and take in a few beers. You do this while spending some alone-time or with a loved one.
Then you subtly take out your camera to capture the moments. The photos to relive these moments.
You now realize the lighting isn’t good or the saturation is off on your camera display. Of course, you can change the camera settings to correct the exposure but this may not always work.
Well, there’s another way around this without fidgeting with your camera during your travels.
Professional photographers and hobbyists combat this problem with post-processing.
Why Post-Process Travel Photos?
Editing images in a photography software helps make visual corrections to images such as:
- shadow recovery
- highlight recovery
- noise reduction
- haze reduction
As you can see, the above adjustments seem a lot but can be done in 2 minutes in a photography software such as Luminar or Capture One. You can find out more about these software by reading the Luminar review or Capture One review.
Mobile Image Editing
With advanced camera phones and performance, a large DSLR camera or photography software isn’t always required for making your photos pop.
There are many mobile apps for Android and iOS that help travel photography editing on the go such as Photoshop or Lightroom Mobile.
These mobile apps have several features that’s sufficient for many photographers. You can even use the spot removal tool to remove unwanted objects in mobile photos – that’s pretty neat.
The downside of camera phones is that they have smaller sensors compared to a modern DSLR or mirrorless camera. For this reason, the quality of the original image isn’t as sharp or detailed.
If you want to print or view the image on a large display, you might see some problems. But then again, this is still good enough for many travelers.
In addition, Instagram and other social apps allow users to make image adjustments within the app.
Some of these adjustments are individual adjustments to change the lightning or it could be a filter to color grade the image. This results in not needing another image editing app.
Advanced Travel Photography Editing
Majority of the most breath-taking travel photos are edited on a laptop or desktop using professional photography software.
As good as mobile photos and editing can be, I believe you still need to take some photos with a modern camera and make some finishing touches at home.
There is also the case for RAW photos. It’s better to capture images with RAW files instead of JPEG. RAW files hold more data, which in turn provide photographers more freedom and options to enhance photos. In situations like these, you need a RAW editor like Lightroom or Capture One.
Furthermore, if you decide to print your images, you’ll need to soft proof the image in photography software. Soft proofing is the photography practice of preparing an image file for print because not all printers produce the same print in terms of saturation and brightness.
Regardless of if you decide to use professional photography software or not, travel photography is a fulfilling hobby. Just getting out there and shooting is fun.
