What is Cantilever Racking

Cantilever Racking

When you buy a product off of Amazon or some other online retailer, most people don’t think to much about where that product is being stored and where it will be shipped from. However, warehouse storage and systems are critical in allowing places like Amazon and other retailers to thrive in the ecommerce world.

One of the critical systems of any warehouse is the type of racking system that they use. Let’s go over one of the most popular racking systems out there, which is cantilever racking.

Cantilever Racking

Cantilever racking is a storage system that is designed to store awkward shaped, or bulky materials. Warehouses that specialize in raw materials such as pipe, steel, or wood can benefit greatly from having racking companies install cantilever racking.

One of the unique things about this sort of racking system is that there are no vertical obstructions in the area that stores the materials. This can be extremly beneficial for long awkardly shaped raw materials such as pipes or logs.

Cantilver racks can also use upright columns which can connect to the base and has holes for the cantilever arms to fit in. The uprights can be designed to work wiht a single or double sided racking unit. Some of the essential pieces to these types of racking systems include:

  • Arms – These are connected to the upright columns and are actually used to store the raw materials on.
  • Decking – This is an optional feature which can be used to provide a solid shelf for certain material applications.
  • Braces – These are used to stabilize the upright columns which provide support horizontally and diagonally.

Types of Steel

These racking systems can be made out of different types of steel. Roll formed steel is very common because it is low cost and can handle light-weight to medium-weight applications. This type of steel is also very easily adjustable due to the ligtweight material.

Structural steel based sytems are heavy duty and can be used for heavy raw materials such as storing other steels, pipes, logs, etc.  This sort of steel will also alow for taller racking systems which can maximize storage space in your warehouse.

As you can see, there are many advantages to using a cantilever system if you house raw materials in your  warehouse that may have awkward shapes or long sizes. By using racks to hold the materials there, you can make access to these raw materials much easier for storage and retrieval.
