Things You Need When Moving into a New Apartment or Home

Moving into a New Apartment

So you are ready to move? Congratulations! Maybe this is your first time traveling alone and you need some important things for your apartment. Maybe you’re finally upgrading to your own home and wanting you to have the things you need for your first home. Even if you are an experienced veterinarian, you may be looking for and improving things that you can buy for a new home.

No matter in which situation, we are glad that you are here. Our new House Checklist Common Household Items covers everything you need to make entertaining upgrades to get the most out of your home.

Move in Essentials:

We start with a few things that make the move easier. The move day can be exhausting, but with a little preparation, it can be a lot easier.

Before the moving day:

  • Set Up Utilities

Make sure that your electricity, gas, water and Internet connection is switched on before the collection date!

Have a few basic things ready:

  • Garbage bags
  • Box cutter
  • Basic tools – to facilitate the assembly of all Ikeas furniture.
  • First Aid Kit – Accidents happen during the move. You do not have to be fancy, but it helps if you have some basics at hand when moving in.
  • Batteries – Especially 9V batteries for all smoke detectors that need to be replaced
  • Light bulbs – always good to have a hand in case something burns out or breaks.
  • Toilet paper – you’ll need it someday, better sooner than later.

Some other things to keep in mind:

  • New locks – who knows what the previous owner did with his keys? Or which neighbor has a copy? It’s a good idea to replace your locks every time you move. We recommend upgrading to a Smart Lock!
  • Safe – Even a simple safe is better than nothing. If movers, craftsmen, landlords or neighbors in and out of the house, you should make sure that your valuables are protected.

Smart Home & Technology:

Smart home technology has come a long way in recent year. Adding a few devices connected to the Internet can make your life more comfortable and give you more sense when you’re away from home. When it comes to moving during the day, there are two important things you want to have with you: an internet modem and a wireless router.

Modem – Frequently provided by your cable provider, but you have the option to buy your own.

Router – We like the Google-supported TP-Link and ASUS on Hub routers. Just plug in some cables, download the companion app, and you’ll have a fast Internet in no time.

Some other things to consider before moving in:

  • Smart Thermostat – Wi-Fi enabled thermostats are a great way to keep your home comfortable without spending a tone a month on energy costs. When you buy a new house, this is a great investment. Smart thermostats are one of the few products you can buy for your home that actually pays off for itself. With our top selection of smart thermostats you can save 30% energy each month.
  • Ethernet cables – They are always good to have and it is the worst thing if you do not have them when you need them.
  • Overvoltage protection.
  • Extension cable.
  • Amazon Echo.

Kitchen utensils:

  • Trashcans and bags
  • Step stool
  • Sponges
  • Solvent
  • Clotheshorse
  • Dishcloth
  • Napkins
  • Paper towels
  • Plastic bags
  • Ice cube container
  • can opener

Basics of cooking:

You also want to consider some basics for cooking. Again we lost our favorites for each of these articles, but here are a few points to keep in mind:

  • Utensil Holders – Now that you have all these great tools, you can easily reach them with a utensil holder for your kitchen counter. We like this stainless steel, but there are a variety of flavors.
  • cutting board
  • baking paper
  • Tupperware
  • Bottle opener & corkscrew
  • Measuring cup
