World Asthma Day is an annual awareness day celebrated every first Tuesday of May intending to raise awareness about asthma and its effects. This event is supported by the Global Initiative of Asthma (GINA), the World Asthma Foundation, and the US-based National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLB). Millions of people all over the world suffer from asthma and mostly in children.
Importance of World Asthma Day
The purpose of celebrating World Asthma Day is to create awareness about the treatment and support for people affected by asthma. Although the primary goal is to help the asthma patient, it also supports asthma affected families, friends, and caregivers.
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic lung disease which causes trouble in breathing and it affects to varying degrees. This disease is caused by swelling and inflammation of bronchial tubes. Asthma is not a curable disease and it can be controlled at a certain stage depending on the effects. The symptoms of asthma include coughing, breathlessness, tightness in the chest, and wheezing.
Date of World Asthma Day
This year World Asthma Day will be celebrated on the 5th of May i.e the first Tuesday of May. In 1998, the World Asthma Day was established and the first event of world Asthma day coincided with the first World Asthma Meeting (WAM) in Barcelona, Spain. More than 35 countries are involved. World Asthma Day has grown over time and is widely recognized as the world’s most important event in awareness of asthma.
Every year GINA chooses a distribution of world asthma day materials and themes and coordinates preparation and resources. Various health care professionals and organizations take part in the celebration by showing their activities related to asthma at many public places to help people reduce their burden of asthma. It’s very necessary to Control the current status of asthma in the world and it has become the responsibility of all the health care professionals and not only the patients. Asthma management requires collaborative efforts of the patients, asthma carers, health professionals, community health groups, and other health care systems globally.

Every year GINA chooses a theme of World Asthma Day to create awareness about the asthma disease. This year World Asthma Day will focus on “Enough asthma Deaths”. But due to the global pandemic, the GINA has postponed the promotion of World Asthma Day until the next notice.

GINA provides many free resources for health care organizations, charities, and members of the public who wish to organize their awareness activities for World Asthma Day.
World Asthma Day activities may include:
- free asthma screening clinics at a local surgery or hospitalizations
- arranging media advertisements (radio, TV, internet)
- organizing debates about local factors which can affect asthma sufferers
- setting up a free asthma telephone helpline
- educating children about asthma in a fun manner using games
Ideas for fundraising events include sponsored activities such as walks, swims, and runs.
