World Heart Day

World Heart Day is celebrated every year to make people all through the world, about the health of the heart among the common. To inform people to take care of their hearts, this initiative was founded in the year 2000. A huge percentage of the common public in society is suffering from heart diseases like stroke, heart attack, heart failure, etc. Heart issues are the leading causes of death all around the world.

Every year this day is held on September 29th and is celebrated to draw attention to heart disease and the issues it can cause. This day promotes various lifestyle changes and preventative measures a person can do which can help them avoid strokes, heart attacks, and other cardiovascular diseases. It has been observed that over a 17million people die every year due to heart disease and more people than are killed by cancer, malaria, and HIV.

According to the World Heart Federation, at least 81% of the premature deaths can be protected by controlling 4 main risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet, use of alcohol, and lack of physical activity.

In 1946, the International Society of Cardiology was formed so cardiologists could share information on the latest advances in the treatment of various heart diseases. The International Cardiology Federation was formed, in 1970. These 2 agencies would then merge 8 years later, to become the International Society and Federation of Cardiology, which is also known as ISFC, in 1978.

During the mid-1990s, an agreement was signed between the UNESCO, World Health Organization, and the ISFC. These agencies decided to cooperate with each other on health-related issues such as rheumatic fever, Chagas’ disease, and heart disease. After two years, the ISFC Board decided to change its name to the World Heart Federation. Ever since this agency currently works with member agencies all over the world and has been at the forefront of cardiovascular health.

In 2000, the World Heart Federation decided to organize World Heart Day which is observed on the last Sunday of each year. Over the next 13 years, they would then launch a number of initiatives that would raise the attention given to cardiovascular diseases. In the year of 2013, the World Heart Federation decided to organize the holiday on the 29th of September each year, a day that it has been celebrated on ever since.

The heart-related problems and deaths can be solved by the active involvement of the common public through the campaign of world health day. Various private and governmental organizations including NGOs in the world are working to spread the awareness of CVD to the people(cardiovascular disease-the world’s number one killer).

World Heart Day is celebrated by both governmental and non-governmental agencies all around the world. These agencies often organize activities and events such as concerts, marathons, and sporting events to make people aware of the problem of heart disease. It also organizes a number of events in many countries. Some of these events also include public talks, fitness sessions, stage shows, concerts, exhibitions, and even science forums.
