Roofing Components : Basics and Everything To Know About

Roofing Components Basics

Unlike the past days, there has been a lot of advancement in the field of construction and like other building materials, there has been considerable advancement in the roofing techniques and materials as well. In fact, previously people used to consider only a few materials for roofing but now there is a variety in the materials for roofing the houses. It is important to know some of the basics of roofing terminologies and materials so that one may have the basic knowledge about roofing and construction. In this way, the homeowners will be able to get the best roofing materials while constructing their houses.

Before proceeding to further details it is very important first of all to know the basic function of a roof. Majorly the roof is meant to protect the home from all the external elements like light, heat, storm, rainfall and such. I order to serve all these functions it is very important that the roof of the house must be strong enough so that it can withstand all these barriers and pressures.

That is why the best materials should be chosen while laying the roofing of the houses. There are different types of roofing materials when it comes to construction choices. The type you select for roofing will basically determine how easily the external elements like water, snow, light, and heat are diverted away and are prevented from entering the house.

All the roofing techniques follow some basic principles and construction materials. A study of some of the basic roofing components is given below:

Roofing components:

While constructing the house, the roofing is always laid in the form of layers. This will make the structure stronger and more impermeable to external factors. The basic layering structure is such that first of all there is an underlayment of the roof. Then comes the flashing over underlayment and finally the tiles of shingles are covered to give the ultimate protection layer for the roof.

The underlayment of the roof:

This is the basic layer and it is also considered as the foundation of the roof. Normally the underlayment is in the form of a black paper. The underlayment is laid directly over the sheeting of plywood and the main purpose of the underlayment is to seal the roof from all the eternal elements from leaking and perforating inside. In other words, this is the first protective layer of the roof. Then comes the flashing.

Flashing of the roof:

By flashing one refers to the layer of metal pieces. This layer is basically meant for diverting the water and such external elements. Usually, after the rainfall, water tends to accumulate in such places as the hips and valleys of the roof. The places where water accumulates are most vulnerable to leakage as these places can be damaged and water may perforate inside the roof causing the damage. If this continues for a longer time then the ceiling may also get damaged. For that’s purpose normally a galvanized flashing is used.

A layer of shingles or tiles:

The next layer is of the shingles or tiles which make up the last part of the roof. As this layer is exposed to the outer environment, therefore it is imperative that it should be impermeable and strong enough to act as a strong barrier for the eternal elements. When the shingles and tiles for residential roofing are considered, there are some typical elements from which these tiles are made of. In fact, the shingles and tiles are considered ideal for residential roofing and after so many years these are still in fashion these days.

Trim of the roof:

Trim is laid on the places of roofs like hip or the ridge where the two ends meet and there is a risk of leakage.
