National Youth Day: What is Its Significance and History?

National Youth Day in India is observed on 12th January every year, for making awareness in people and encourage them to get information about their rights. This day is a way to create a positive outlook towards the people of India and educating them about how to live in a Democratic country.

National Youth Day is celebrated on the birthday of Swami Vivekanand. A man with many talents, he was a philosopher, reformer, and thinker. The vision behind celebrating National Youth Day is to pass on the thoughts and ideology of Swami Vivekanand for which he worked his entire life. The youth of India idolize him and try to walk on his pathway.  

History of National Youth Day:

The government of India decided in the year 1984, to celebrate Youth Day on the birthday of Swami Vivekanand. The government of India wants the people of India to learn about the ideology of Swamiji. The philosophies of Swami Vivekanand can be life-changing and inspiring for the youth of India. 

India is a country with a majority of the population is young, it is very important to guide youth’s potential in the betterment of the Nation. They want to channelize the youth’s power into something useful and meaningful.

Theme of Youth Day:

This year’s theme for youth day is “Youth Engagement for Global Action”, the vision behind this theme is to make people aware of the multiple ways youth’s voice is benefiting the nation and many different establishments. The theme also targets the participation of youth in government institutions can be very good for the country. 

Ways of Youth Engagement:

  • Engaging at community and local level.
  • Engagement at the National level.
  • Engaging at the International level.

The United Nations have started an online campaign, by the name #31DaysOfYOUth, to cheer the youth of India along the whole month for engaging in global issues. Covid 19 has significantly affected the entire population, there is no definite record that how much youth is affected due to the pandemic. The government has started a program by the name World Program of Action for Youth (WPAY) to make sure youth don’t suffer and have their needs fulfilled. 

Benefits of Meaningful Youth Engagement:

Meaningful youth engagement makes sure that youth feels equal and important aspects of society and put in some efforts towards their health and well-being. National Youth Day is celebrated in full spirits doing parades, several essay-writings, speech on Swami Vivekanand, etc.
