Plumbing tools on the kitchen.

Plumbing in your home involves the free flow of water through pipes behind the walls and under the floors bringing in freshwater to your house and taking out the waste drain water away from your house. As your home ages, plumbing problems are bound to occur.  It is best to be aware of the common plumbing problems and solutions so that you know how to tackle them by yourself with a few essential handy tools and when to call the plumber.

Clogged drains and toilets

When water does not flow freely down the drain in your kitchen or bathroom or toilet, it means it has been clogged due to large or solid items unable to move down the drain. In the kitchen, it can be peels, oil, coffee grinds, poultry skins, or fibrous waste. In sinks and showers, it can be hair, shampoo lid, or soap cover.

In the kitchen drain, remove the clog by using a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. This helps to break down all clogs that are trapped within. In the bathroom and toilet, you can start with a plunger to remove the clog. Plumbing snakes can also dislodge blockages.

Leaky faucets and pipes

Dripping faucets can send hundreds of gallons of water down the drain and this could be the most annoying problem in any household. When rubber or silicone-based washers in your taps become stiff, torn, or dislodged it causes leaks through pipes and faucets. These washers form a water-tight seal preventing more water from pushing its way through the pipes and out of your faucets. When damage occurs these washers allow small amounts of water to drip from the faucets. You need to replace the washers if necessary. If you have the specialty tools, you can do it yourself or otherwise, you need to call the plumber.

Leaks in the pipes occur in the joints. You can use commercial joint fillers and fitting compounds to seal the leaks. A permanent solution would be replacing it with a new one. Replacing the U –joint under your sink can be a complex one and it is best left for the plumber to handle it. As a temporary measure, you can use a rubber sheet or leak tape, or compression clamp till the plumber comes.

Water heater issues

Not having enough hot water, discolored water, leaks are some of the water heater problems. Mineral deposits and scaling affects the performance of the water heater. The sediments in the water heater need to be drained out by a professional plumber.

Low water pressure

It is another common plumbing problem at home. It can happen due to leaky pipes or the build-up of minerals and sediments in pipes or showerheads or in the faucet aerators.  Remove the faucet aerator or showerhead and clean the buildup.

Running toilet

This problem causes a lot of wastage of water. It occurs when the inner workings of the toilet are in repair or damaged condition. Check the flapper valve, loose-fill tube, imbalanced float, and other parts for any signs of repair. Call your plumber to replace the toilet components.
