Ever wondered how would it be to experience the Game of Thrones (GoT) filming destinations in real life? Watching the serial is one thing but to actually witness the places where some of the best GoT episodes were shot, is a completely different experience altogether. Game of Thrones episodes has been shot in various countries such as Croatia, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. But undoubtedly Croatia has had a fascinating filming destination in the cities of Dubrovnik, Lokrum, and Split where some of the best episodes and scenes were shot.
There are numerous ways of getting to Dubrovnik, through the plane, the bus, personal conveyance or the ferry. People normally take the ferry to have the real feel of arriving at King’s Landing on a ship. There are several tours that are being organized by different tour companies. The tour normally commences from the Pile gate onto the first location, the St Lawrence Fortress (Fort Lovrijenac) famously known as The Red Keep. It has seen many famous scenes shot there involving King Joffrey, Jamie Lannister, Cersei Lannister and many more. Then there is the old town, famous for the second season episode where King Joffrey ordered his guards to execute the crowd which started a riot.
The next spot worth watching is the notorious brothel of Lord Baelish at the main street of Dubrovnik. The place is near to the Baroque Staircase also known as the Walk of Shame street where Cersei was made to pay for her sins. Then comes the Great Sept of Baelor spot, where so many amazing scenes were shot. In season 6 the High Septon and others were executed there as well. There is also the second-largest wall in the world after the Great Wall of China. This wall is breathtaking and stretches to 1.9km, in GoT it is the protective wall of the King’s Landing.
The next beautiful destination is of Lokrum where Daenerys Targaryen decided to take refuge. The city of Qarth is located in Lokrum. An equally amazing charter boat Croatia is available to take people from Dubrovnik to the small island of Lokrum. It is a very quiet and gentle place, no wonder it was used for its elegance as the city of Qarth. The island is enriched with beauty and history.
The next destination is the city of Split. The city is full of breathtaking destinations such as Trsteno which has lush green gardens and amazing scenery, perfect fit for the Tyrell gardens. After visiting Trsteno, people head towards Klis Fortress. This is the Daenerys Targaryen’s fortress in the city of Meereen which was recently under siege by the Great Masters in season 6. Split contains some other amazing places such as Diocletian’s cellars where Daenerys kept Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion, her three dragons. Papaliceva where the Grey Worm and Ser Barristan were attacked and also the ground where the Sons of Harpy and the Unsullied fought.
All these destinations are worth watching and staying at. They give the true feel of Got and it is a must for every GoT fan.
