England is a land steeped in history. It possesses some of the world's most famous historic sites. Here is a run down of the top five historic attractions that are 'must sees' when in England…

1) TOWER OF LONDON - England's top historic attraction, the Tower of London is more than 1000 years old. Situated on the bank of the River Thames the Tower has a history intertwined with the greatest characters in British & World history. This is the very place where Anne Boelyn and Lady Jane Grey were beheaded, and is where the 'two princes' mysteriously disappeared during their imprisonment. Visitors can stand on the spot where Oliver Cromwell was executed and where Guy Fawkes was interrogated after his failed plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. Today, the Tower of London holds the magnificent Crown Jewels - a spectacle that captures the imagination of visitors no matter what their age.

2) YORK MINSTER - Located in the northern city of York, York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in England. First dating from around the 12th century, it is a staggering 524ft long by 249ft wide. At its highest the lantern tower reaches up to more than 230ft above the ground. Visitors can climb the central tower and be rewarded with breathtaking views over the city of York and beyond.

3) CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL - Southeast of London in the county of Kent is the magnificent city of Canterbury and its esteemed cathedral. One of the best known cathedrals in the world, Canterbury has a history stretching back over some fourteen centuries. The cathedral is a stunning sight when approached through the medieval streets to the south and west.

4) WESTMINSTER ABBEY - The venue for many a royal occasion, Westminster Abbey in the heart of London is simply breathtaking. Whether it’s the imposing Gothic entrance, glittering high altar or the stunning 100ft high nave a visit to Westminster Abbey will stay with you forever.

5) WINDSOR CASTLE - The official country residence of the Queen of England, Windsor Castle is situated to the west of London in the town of Windsor. It is the largest castle in the world that remains inhabited, the Union Jack flying high when the Queen herself is in residence. The Castle and its 900 years of history are open to visitors daily.
