Are You the Wrong Person For Your Job?

Author : Jonathan R Taylor
In meeting with clients, it’s often interesting to see the contrast between their personality profiles and what their current job descriptions involve. The difference can often be very clear. For example, I met with a client this week who is an accountant for a local country club. He makes what most would consider a very good salary with excellent benefits, yet when we first met, he told me that something was missing. He was growing tired of the lack of challenge and responsibility he had within his organization and longed to start his own business.

After taking the 48 Days Career and Behavior Personality computerized report, it became evident why he wanted a change. The results indicated that my client has a dominant personality and enjoys high levels of responsibility. He is a definite eagle type, who is bold, adventurous, and big picture oriented. His current position asked him to be more of an owl (analytical, predictable, and detailed oriented).

Needless to say, his personality did match that of someone who is destined to be an entrepreneur. We are currently in the process of evaluating several different business models to determine what type business would be the right fit for his unique interests, values, and gifts.

What about your situation? Are you in a job or career that doesn’t fit who you are? Recent surveys have shown that most people are dissatisfied with their jobs and would change if they felt they could. The problem is most people think they have trapped themselves into a particular field because of their work history or education. This is simply not the case. Most people aren’t working in the field they majored in 10 years after they graduate from college.

So maybe it’s time to make that change. For an assessment of your own strengths and abilities, click here.
