3 Tips For Choosing A Good Retirement Home

Take Time to Gather Information

Such an important decision requires reflection. Making the right choice is based on a number of criteria and in order to be able to compare, you should find the following information. Look for institutions that have a label. The establishments may have different requirements, but with a label you will be assured of the quality of the services.

Ask for price information to know what is included or not in the price of the day. Some services such as linen maintenance, rented television, live streaming news, dependency package, management of diseases and disabilities, pedicure, incontinence protection… may be added to the bill. Inquiring upstream prevents unpleasant surprises.

Ask for a copy of the contract of the stay as well as the rules of procedure. An institution that refuses to provide this mandatory documentation should be avoided. The Social Life Council reports can also give you an idea of the problems encountered by the institution and the efforts made to resolve them.

Find out about enrollments, specialist professionals (physiotherapists, nurses, etc.) and staff work cycles. Are they sufficient? How many residents do each of them have to deal with? Do they have diplomas and training (e.g. for wellness)? When is the coordinating physician present? This is the person who coordinates the work of all the nursing staff, a rare presence is therefore a bad sign. How does the night / weekend / summer surveillance work? How are critical illnesses and emergencies managed?

What is the program of activities? Ask if this is appropriate for your parent.

2) Ask for help sorting

As you read from the previous point, there is a lot of information to look for, and there are other things to add to it. You have to find a good institution in your area and make sure that it is appropriate for the level of independence of the person who will be in a retirement home. All types of stays proposed will not be suitable and the thorny issue of the budget should never be forgotten.

3) Visit the Venues

Visits are a good way to know if the venue will be suitable. By doing carrying out several visits, it will be easier to know what you want or not and compare. If you have a preference, go there several times, at different times (morning, late afternoon, week, weekend …) and unexpectedly. Why not try their meals to get a good idea of what is eaten? Here are some points you should pay attention to during visits:

Family and friends must be able to visit so that the person is not isolated. See if there is transport to facilitate the coming and if it is easy to get there by car. Having a specific geographical area will help you. A place close to the current environment would help to maintain a social bond.

Watch the residents: are they bored in front of the television? Do they look good? Do they attend workshops?

Is the staff welcoming? Do they take care of the residents? Do they respond to residents’ requests? Do they smile when you have your back turned?

Meet with the lead team (director, health officer and coordinating physician). We must distinguish between good managers and those who have empathy for the residents and care for the atmosphere, services… In short, think about the human factor.
